How to Get to Bible Rock from Colombo & Kandy (Routes, Buses & Tuk-tuks)

Bible Rock — Bathalegala to locals — sits above the village of Hathgampola in the Aranayaka division of the Kegalle District. It’s wonderfully central: roughly 90 km from Colombo and only about 30 km from Kandy. The catch is the last few kilometres, where the road narrows and climbs sharply. Here’s exactly how to get there without any wrong turns.

The driving route (the easy part)

Whether you start in Colombo or Kandy, you’ll follow the A1 Colombo–Kandy highway to the town of Mawanella. From there:

1. At Mawanella, turn off the A1 onto the Aranayaka Road (B278).
2. Follow the B278 to Gevilipitiya, then turn right.
3. Carry on to Hathgampola town.
4. In Hathgampola, look for the Bathalegala road — there’s a Sinhala signboard. Turn left here.
5. Follow this road up to the trailhead.

If you’re using Google Maps, search for “Bathalegala” or “Bible Rock Aranayaka” rather than just “Bible Rock”, which can point to other spots.

Coming from Kandy, you’ll get a bonus: from around the Kadugannawa–Balana stretch of the A1, look out to the side and you’ll see Bathalegala’s flat profile rising in the distance — from this angle many people think it looks just like Sigiriya.

By public transport (bus + a short hop)

It’s very doable on a budget:

1. Take any Colombo–Kandy (or Kandy-bound) bus and get off at Mawanella.
2. From Mawanella, catch the Mawanella–Aranayaka bus, route No. 659.
3. Ask the conductor to drop you near the Hathgampola temple road, or at the board pointing “to the Bathalegala road.”
4. From there it’s a tuk-tuk ride or a walk up to the trailhead.

Buses are cheap and frequent on the Mawanella leg; the Aranayaka bus runs regularly through the day but thins out in the evening, so don’t leave your return too late.

The last stretch — read this before you drive up

This is the part travellers get caught out by. The road from the Hathgampola junction up to the trailhead is narrow and steep. In practice:

• Motorbikes, tuk-tuks and small cars can make it to the trailhead.
• Larger vehicles (vans, big SUVs, buses) should park down in Hathgampola — that adds roughly 3 km of walking before you even reach the bottom of the trail.
• Parking at the trailhead is limited — a handful of vehicles, no more. On weekends and holidays it fills up early.

If you’re not confident on tight mountain roads, the stress-free option is to take a tuk-tuk from Hathgampola to the trailhead and arrange for it to collect you, or to let your accommodation organise transport and a guide.

How long does the journey take?

As a rough guide, allow:

• Colombo → trailhead: about 2.5–3 hours by car, longer by bus with the change at Mawanella.
• Kandy → trailhead: about 1–1.5 hours by car.

Traffic on the A1 around Kegalle and Mawanella can be slow, especially mid-morning and late afternoon, so build in a buffer — particularly if you’re aiming to start the hike early while it’s cool.

The smartest plan: arrive the night before

Because the trail rewards an early start (cooler air, clearer views, and the summit to yourself), the most relaxed way to do Bible Rock is to arrive the evening before and sleep close to the trailhead.
