Farm-to-table
Village Food of Bathle
Grown in the village, cooked over firewood, and served the way it has been for generations — the perfect reward after the climb.
There's a particular kind of hunger that comes after a morning on Bathalegala — and the cure is waiting back at Bathle Eco Resort. Our kitchen does one thing and does it beautifully: real Sri Lankan village food, cooked on firewood with vegetables grown a few steps from the pot. No buffet trays, no shortcuts — just recipes passed down through the village and served warm on a clay plate.
This is farm-to-table in the most literal sense. Jackfruit from the tree, greens from the garden, treacle from the kithul palm, curd set in clay. Come hungry.

Rice & curry on a clay plate
The centrepiece — a spread of garden vegetables, sambols and curries.
Kos & polos (young jackfruit) curry
Slow-cooked jackfruit — hearty, smoky and famously filling.
Gotu kola sambol
A fresh, finely-chopped pennywort salad with coconut and lime.
Hoppers (appa)
Bowl-shaped, crispy-edged rice pancakes, often with a soft egg centre.
Kola kenda (herbal porridge)
A green herbal rice porridge — the traditional village breakfast.
Village dhal & free-range chicken curry
Comfort food cooked over firewood the way it has been for generations.
Kithul treacle & buffalo curd
The classic Sri Lankan dessert — set curd drizzled with palm treacle.
Fresh king coconut (thambili)
Straight from the garden — the natural way to rehydrate after a climb.
Cooked the old way
Almost everything is cooked over a firewood hearth, which is the secret behind that gentle, smoky depth you simply can't get from a gas ring. The rice & curry spread is the centrepiece — a generous fan of curries, sambols and mallung around a mound of rice — but ask and you might find hoppers (appa) at breakfast, a bowl of green kola kenda to start the day, or kithul treacle over buffalo curd to finish.
The tastiest way to do Bible Rock
Our most popular booking pairs the two best parts of a Bathle visit: a guided morning climb and a home-cooked village lunch waiting when you're back down. It's the Hike + Village Food experience — and it's exactly how we'd spend the day ourselves.
