Where is Bible Rock?
Bathalegala stands above the village of Hathgampola in the Aranayaka Division of the Kegalle District, in Sri Lanka's hill-country foothills. It's roughly 90 km from Colombo and only about 30 km from Kandy, which makes it an easy add-on to almost any hill-country itinerary. Interestingly, viewed from the Kadugannawa / Balana side, its profile famously resembles Sigiriya.
How high is it?
The summit reaches about 797.9 m (≈2,618 ft) above sea level, and the flat top spans roughly 710 m across — that broad, level plateau is exactly what gives the mountain its "open book" silhouette and its English name.
Why is it called "Bible Rock"?
British colonists thought the flat-topped, steep-sided mountain looked like a giant open Bible resting on a lectern — and the name stuck. There's far more to the story, including its role as a Kandyan watchtower with a bonfire alarm chain that warned of the advancing Portuguese.

How do you get there?
From Colombo or Kandy you follow the A1 to Mawanella, turn onto the Aranayaka Road (B278), pass through Gevilipitiya and Hathgampola, and turn onto the Bathalegala road to the trailhead. The final stretch is narrow and steep — only small vehicles, tuk-tuks and motorbikes make it to the top.

What's the hike like?
There are two ways up — a longer ~2-hour climb from the Hathgampola temple, and a short route from the upper trailhead that many finish in under an hour. Expect Maana grass, rubber trees, forest, a historic stone well, and one fun rocky scramble with carved steps. The summit has two viewpoints and a small abandoned temple.

When should you go?
Aim for the dry season (January–April, plus mid-July to September) for clear views and safe, dry rock. Avoid the south-west monsoon, and never climb in a thunderstorm — the exposed summit is notably prone to lightning.

What can you see from the top?
On a clear day the panorama takes in the Knuckles Range, Ambuluwawa, Alagalla, Kadugannawa, Samasara, Urakanda, Devanagala and even Adam's Peak. It's especially magical at sunrise, with mist filling the valleys below.
